Area of October: House of the Royal Street
The Royal High Street was the principal axis of the Medina, around which the residential zone and the craftsmen's workshops, that were to the service of the nasrid court, were located. Its tracing started from the Door of the Wine up to the zone where currrently is located the state-owned Hotel of San Francisco and the Palace of the Abencerrajes.
Among the buildings of the Royal High Street we emphasize this house, builted in the last years of the 13th century or first of the 14th century as showing by its decorative motives. In the northwest corner, adjacent to this house there is a bathroom, builted afterwards, which can be used as an entry for both buildings though, possibly the house had its own access and its original entry on the mentioned street.
The House is organized around a patio, with room bays on the four sides, and a central pond used, on the one hand to refresh the hotness of Granada summers and to improve the lighting of the closest rooms, and on the other hand, to act as mirror, reflecting in its waters the rich decoration of its porticoes. Nowadays, only two of the four bays are still remaining; one in the southern part and another one in the western side. The main room of the house, in whose walls the bathroom leans, is of great interest due to the plaster-works that it preserves.
